Bluestone vs. Pavers & Pricing
Bluestone and pavers are popular choices for outdoor landscaping projects, but they have distinct differences that can influence your decision as to which you want to use in your outdoor project. Bluestone comes in two varieties: Pennsylvania and Shanandoah. Pennsylvania is granular and full of colors while Shanandoah is smooth and uniform in nature. Both types of bluestone are made of sandstone, are expensive to quarry, and provide a natural and elegant look. Bluestone is durable, weather-resistant, and often used for patios, walkways, and pool decks. Pavers are manufactured pieces made from concrete, clay, or natural stone, available in various shapes, colors, and sizes. Pavers offer versatility in design and can mimic the appearance of natural stone at a potentially lower cost because the raw materials are easily sourced. When selecting between bluestone and pavers you need to consider your style and budget preferences. Quality pavers run $15.00-$20.00 installed. Bluestone runs around $25.00 installed.

Proper installation of pavers, bluestone, and hardscapes is crucial for creating durable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing outdoor surfaces. The process begins with thorough planning and site preparation. First, the area should be marked and cleared of vegetation, debris, and any old materials.
The ground is then excavated to the appropriate depth, which typically ranges from 6 to 8 inches for walkways and patios and up to 12 inches for driveways, depending on the expected load and traffic.
A solid base is critical for the longevity of any hardscape installation. A layer of crushed stone or gravel, usually 4 to 6 inches thick, is laid and compacted using a plate compactor. This base layer facilitates drainage and provides a stable foundation. To further enhance stability and prevent weed growth, a geotextile fabric can be installed between the soil and the base material. Next, a 1-inch layer of bedding sand is spread over the compacted base and screeded to create a level surface.
The pavers or bluestone pieces are then carefully laid on top of the bedding sand in the chosen pattern. Precision is crucial at this stage to ensure proper alignment and spacing. Edge restraints are installed along the perimeter to maintain the integrity of the layout and prevent shifting over time. After all the stones are placed, sand is swept into the joints to fill gaps and lock the stones in place. A plate compactor is then used to settle the stones and ensure a stable, even surface.
